Life as a Bird

What is life like for my neighbor, the robin? In this most random essay I’ve written, I ponder this question.

It wakes up early each morning. The dew hasn’t left the grass when the robin comes hopping onto the lawn.

The robin flies short distances and walks a lot. It pokes around the grass, peering around for sudden enemies all the while, hopping from rock to lawn. It bizarrely flies until the edge of the road, then crosses the street by walking.

The robin is a suspicious creature. It looks around everywhere when anyone approaches. It takes brief flights, then runs quickly before nervously taking another short flight.

The robin reminds me of the hobbit. Both are well-mannered and friendly. Also, both take good care of their homes!

The robin tucks its wings behind its back, like a gentle squire folding his arms behind his back. It walks around, occasionally fluttering back to its neat home to check on the chicks and going about its day finding food- worms and seeds in the yard. These birds avoid unnecessary carbs like bread. It seems bread is the ultimate bird junk food.

Instead, the robin hunts astutely, pulling worms and grubs from our garden. It flaps around our birdbath, but flutters in dry patches of dirt more often. Life is good for the busy robin. 🐥
