Why the Weasley Twins are by far the Best Weasleys

This character review column began as- albeit a nerdy- a way for me to share opinions about characters that I liked or disliked in books. It slowly shifted into a column to review literature, but this month, we’ve returned to our roots.

The Weasley family ought not to be exalted to the heights they are. Percy betrays the whole family and leaves home to work for the ministry. Mr. and Mrs. Weasley do the bare minimum for Harry, for a long time. Come on, people- surely you can invite him home for winter break instead of leaving all your children at the school over the holidays so they can keep him company? They know how bizarre Harry’s home situation is yet opt to wait half the summer before even considering whether they should rescue him.

Meanwhile, the Weasley twins continue to go above and beyond.

They help Ron rescue Harry in Book 2 by picking the lock where all his books and broom is kept. They also physically break the bars on Harry’s window. (Sorry if these are spoilers, by the way, but the Harry Potter books have been out for at least 2 or 3 decades now, so it’s definitely on you if you still haven’t gotten around to reading them and you intend to)!

Book Three: They choose to give up probably the most valuable tool ever- the Marauder’s Map- just because they wanted to help Harry reach the village of Hogsmeade for a visit and he was trying to sneak in on his own. Not only does the map highlight secret passages in the halls of Hogwarts- it tracks every single person in the school. It’s just a brilliant tool, one of a kind, that they give up to Harry without a second thought. The Map ends up being crucial to his latter adventures.

Ron has instances of jealousy. Ginny causes several schoolwide emergencies in Book Two. Percy (again) abandons the family- though he does come back when it counts! We don’t hear too much about Charlie, but he does accept a dragon to save Hagrid. Bill is extremely decent, and his wife Fleur also makes lots of sacrifices for the greater good.

Fred and George certainly number among the more decent of the Weasleys.

Finally, they start their joke business. “Fred reckons people need a laugh these days,” says Ron in the final movie. It’s a dream the Weasley twins had all their lives, and they achieve it. Mrs. Weasley initially forbids their experimentation with magic. Dolores Umbridge, the psychopathic Ministry enforcer, passes a law banning their products. Yet, the indisputable success of their creations draws customers and earns them enough to start a shop on Diagon Alley.

The best Weasleys, and that’s a certainty.
