Why Laapataa Ladies is a Cinematic Masterpiece
Laapataa Ladies (which means Missing Ladies) is a 2024-released Netflix film, 
which, during the time of this writing, sits at a glorious 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. I believe the brilliant reception this film has gotten is entirely well deserved. It’s an ode to India’s rich tradition and culture, a heart-warming reminder about how there are many good people out there, and a laugh-out-loud story following a hilarious cast of characters.
What’s particularly unique for an Indian movie is that the characters casted are pretty much completely unknown characters- they aren’t the world-famous movie stars but they’re so perfect for their roles. Everyone- from supporting characters to the main protagonists and antagonists- are naturals. Unlike your average Indian movie, there aren’t interruptive song and dance breaks- just pretty, stirring melodies that add to the story.
The plot, by the way, is about two newly wedded brides who get inadvertently exchanged on a train to their respective families. Women of their walks of life don’t tend to stand up for themselves- but amidst all the troubles and the comedy, these Laapataa Ladies learn a good deal about life.
