Editorial June 2024
Dear Readers,
Why do I get tired at 8 PM these days?! Am I getting old?!
In seriousness, I find it nearly impossible to pull all-nighters. I don’t know if my days are busier, which makes me less productive at night, but long gone are the days when I can get any math done after 10 PM.
I can hardly believe I’m the same person who spent an entire night completing IXLs (extrascholastic online activities) for math class.
However, this is most certainly a good thing. Sleep is essential, and scientists have begun to unearth evidence for just how important it is.
It’s hard to find motivation to complete a day’s goals when you’re tired. Moreover, a bad night’s sleep leaves me waking with fatigue, which leaves a decidedly sour flavor on the day. A bad start in the morning tends to bleed into the rest of the day. Generally, academics advise against pulling all-nighters (staying awake all night) to study. Sleep actually consolidates memory. So, if it’s ever a choice between (1) studying hard for a few hours at the beginning of a night and then getting some
hours of good rest, and (2) studying sporadically throughout the night and getting a few hours of rest here and there, you should choose (1). Choose sleep!
Love,
