Editorial April 2026
Dear Readers,
It is a magical thought that J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were friends: the creators of some of England’s best and most moving, inspiring fiction. Legend has it that they met at a meeting of the Oxford English faculty, and their decades-long friendship (so invaluable to literature) followed. Even once they weren’t as close, Tolkien wrote of Lewis: “we owed each a great debt to the other, and that tie with the deep affection that it begot, remains.” I often imagine what my own friends will continue to accomplish. Some favorite memories have been conversations about our ambitions: late-night discussions of religion with my first-year roommate, family dinner chats about the kind of things we think make a successful life, meditation retreats where we help each other evaluate challenges and find a bit of peace in the silence. I crave more of it: more discussions with my brother about economic sustainability, more chats with my “book club”, more volunteering with peers. I stumbled upon this month’s quote by CS Lewis and, to me, that is real friendship— the opposite of surface connections are 
these ties with real affection. My intention for this month is to show my gratitude for, and to do justice to, these bonds— to pursue interests in health, narratives, and service alongside peers who feel the same way.
