Editorial September 2025
Dear Readers,
This is a violent time in American history. Maybe this didn’t begin now– school shootings have been a very real threat since before I was born. Tragedies like the attack on Columbine High School in 1999 were perhaps once viewed as singularly terrible events. But this hasn’t been the case. It often feels like we live in a nation divided, and there is no clear solution. One solution lies with young people.
As I’ve officially begun my third year of university, I’m keenly feeling that people my age are beginning to enter the workforce. We’ll soon have more sway over how things unfold socially, politically, and ideologically in our nation. A fellow student at my college is already running for political office for the city of Providence.
Accordingly, I think we have an immense power to act with tolerance and understanding. People tend to isolate themselves in echo chambers: we’ve spoken about this in a blog post. I really think we can make a huge difference by
prioritizing societal non-negotiables: treating everyone with respect, keeping an open mind when someone disagrees with us, and honestly making an effort towards the collective good- which will always promote one’s personal good as well.
With love,
Editor Jaanu
